Annotation: The experiences of a group of girls getting ready for their 6th grade softball game in post-war 1949.
Summary: After World War II, in 1949, sixth grade girls in two neighboring towns, are working at getting ready for the traditional sixth grade girls softball game. But, this year is different, this is the fiftieth year anniversary of this game. The various girls share their experiences and viewpoints, all being affected by the war in some way. This year there is a new girl on each team. One girl, Aki, has just returned from living in a Japanese interim camp and the new girl on the other team, Shazam, had been shuffled around because her father was killed in the Pearl Harbor attack and she bluntly dislikes Japanese-Americans. On the day of the important softball games an accident happens and Shazam hurts Aki very badly. She has to stay in bed for months and cannot speak, while Shazam struggles with her many emotional problems. All the girls are very disappointed in not being able to finish the softball game.
