This island is the Life-Saving Station of an all-black lifesaving team. He mingles with the crew members and learns many lifesaving techniques for saving people from the disasters that happen in the ocean. Nathan also finds interest in the stations small library, learning all he can. After he and his father help rescue a crew that lost their boat in a storm, Nathan becomes even more determined to be on the lifesaving team, despite his father’s discouragement for racial reasons.
