Annotation: A young slave girl has a chance to flee her plantation in the last days of the Civil War, in search of her children that were sold away.

Summary: Sarny, who had learned to read as a young slave, is the mother of two children but living on a plantation as a slave she faces the reality that her children are sold away. Sarny is shackled to a wall by her owner, Waller, after he had sold her children, because he knew she would run after them. The owner leaves her on the wall. While she is there soldiers fighting from the north come by and kill Waller and release Sarny from her chains. She soon leaves in search of her children. After finding a paper that tells where her children had been sold, she starts walking towards New Orleans. She is befriended by a wealthy woman, Laura, who hires Sarny for her travels to New Orlean and vows to help her find her children. With the help of Laura, Sarny is able to find her two children. Sarny lives a good life with Laura and eventually gets her own little home with a new husband and two children. Sarny strives to open a school for black children and must over come many challenges, but Laura fully supports her. At the death of Laura, Sarny find out some news that might change her life forever.
