Summary: Tally lives in a society where everyone is turned pretty when they turn sixteen. While Tally is an ugly she becomes friends with another ugly, Shay. They have fun doing what uglies do, hoverboarding and pranks. Shay believes that being forced to be a pretty is not the right thing and she tries to convince Tally to run away with her to another society- a much simpler distant society. Tally doesn't want to go but learns that Shay has disappeared and she goes after her, in hopes of finding her and bringing her back. Tally finds Shay living in the other society, Tally befriends a young man in that society and learns the truth.
